1942
Only once in history has the desire, and ability, to rule the world been in the mind and hands of one man. This is the era we found ourselves in, in the 1930's and the early 40's. For most of us kids in Muskegon, this was the last thing on our minds. Our parents were busy emerging from the 'Great Depression'. The children of that age knew little or nothing about what was going on across the ocean. We were still trying to get used to having three meals a day and warm clothing for the winter.
Some of us were lucky enough to have adults in our lives that kept our interest in life and our country on an even keel. In Muskegon some of those adults were teachers and leaders in the area schools, and the businesses on Western Avenue; and, in those days, on Broadway just off Peck Street.
This, then, was the atmosphere pervading Greater Muskegon when I first became aware of my surroundings. I had heard of FDR, but not Eisenhower. My greatest fear was having my English teacher, Mrs. Fish, call me to the front of the room to diagram a simple sentence on the blackboard.
West of the Mississippi River was still the land of the Cowboys and Indians. And this was the most that was on my mind every morning as I headed west to Moon School.
